Dr. Jessica Steed, DVM

Medical Director

Hi! I’m Dr. Jessica Steed. I started my veterinary career here at Beaver Animal Clinic as a veterinary technician in 1996 during my college breaks (I went to school for Veterinary Technology right after high school). I returned as a veterinarian once I graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. I eventually left for a few years (moved to Ohio) but have been back at Beaver Animal Clinic since 2016!

I love veterinary medicine and how it is advancing so we can better help our pet family, who provide so much joy for us! I have an interest in Internal Medicine and enjoy doing abdominal ultrasounds. I also do some acupuncture!

I have three teenagers who keep me busy with their travel sports, but in my (rare) free time, I like to travel and get outside! I currently only have cats (two Sphynx and a Snowshoe) since I lost my Doberman to dilated cardiomyopathy.

Dr. Doug Knueven, DVM

Associate Veterinarian

Hi, I’m Dr. Doug. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and have always loved animals. I received my veterinary degree from Ohio State University in 1987 and have operated several veterinary hospitals in the Beaver County area of Pennsylvania (north of Pittsburgh) ever since. I am especially proud to have served as the veterinarian for the Beaver County Humane Society for five years.

After being in practice for several years, I began to feel discouraged by the limitations of conventional veterinary medicine and sought to broaden my training beyond traditional approaches. This led me to participate in an acupuncture course offered by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). I was immediately captivated by the 150-hour class and immersed myself in learning this ancient system. After receiving IVAS certification in 1995, I quickly put my new knowledge to work helping previously hopeless clinical cases.

I have since expanded my knowledge of holistic veterinary care by attending continuing education courses on Bach Flower Remedies and Clinical Nutrition. I am certified in animal chiropractic and veterinary Chinese herbology and have completed the 150-hour Professional Course in Veterinary Homeopathy offered by Dr. Richard Pitcairn. I have been an active member of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association since 1995 and have been on their conference committee since 2008.

In 1998, I introduced Pittsburgh-area veterinarians to the use of veterinary acupuncture by lecturing on the subject at the Western Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association. I have since continued lecturing on many topics involving holistic veterinary medicine at veterinary conferences both nationally and internationally. I have also authored two books on the subject; Stand by Me, A Holistic Handbook for Animals, Their People, and the Lives They Share Together and The Holistic Health Guide for Dogs: Natural Care for the Whole Dog.

Dr. Amanda Brown, DVM

Associate Veterinarian

Hi! I’m Dr. Amanda Brown. I am a Pittsburgh native who began my academic career as a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and went on to complete veterinary school at the University of Wisconsin in 2018. While in veterinary school, I began my training in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) at the Chi Institute, and became certified in veterinary acupuncture, herbal, and food therapy. I then received my animal chiropractic education at the Health Pioneer’s Institute and national certification by the AVCA in 2020. My training is an ongoing journey, with interests in new innovative therapies and continued enrollment in Western and Ayurvedic Herbalism, Tui-na, and rehabilitation courses. As an admitted life-long student, I am always eager to expand my knowledge and medical toolbox in order to provide the best treatment and management strategies for my patients.

I have many interests, including traveling, hiking, camping, gardening, permaculture, sustainable design, homesteading, sports, music concerts, and most importantly spending time with my fur-family Luna, Boogie, Ru, Simon, Momo, Sage, Quinny, and Luci.
